Man vs Wild - volcanochaser

Closeup photo of the shatter ring shows the shattered sections of surface crust which were forced up by the clogged tube before 1992. There is no spatter or cinders as is common in eruptive vents, but only dense pahoehoe lava as is common in surface flows. Ferns and other vegetation indicate that there is no lava a few feet below and certainly no noxious fumes. A well made platform of rocks about four feet square by three feet high is shown on the far end. This is also clearly visible on the left side of the aerial photo of Bear Grylls as he lands inside the shatter ring.
