Big Island 2008 - volcanochaser

Tree mold and the tree trunk that used to grow there. About 30 inches in diameter. Tree molds are created when a lava flow overruns a forest and the lava cools around the trees. Typically the base in contact with the lava will burn faster and cause the tree to topple. If the adjoining lava has crusted over, the tree may just lay on top and not burn. The section of the trunk inside the lava will continue to burn and leave an empty mold of the tree, including the root system. Location is just east of Royal Gardens on the 1986-1992 lava flows.
