volcanochaser > Bear crosses the first bridge over the fissures that were blocking his way next to the ocean. This bridge is actually a few hundred feet from Crater Rim Drive on the summit of Kilauea. No such fissures exist near the ocean. This is a very popular viewing area and the early morning shadows show that it was probably taped before most of the tourists arrived.
volcanochaser > Bear's boot catches on fire spontaneously while supposedly walking on hot lava. Shoe soles will start to melt and feel slippery after several minutes when walking on recently crusted lava, but not burst into flames instantly. Not even wood will burst into flames when in contact with crusted lava. Probably faked with the use of lighter fluid and a match. This sequence is only a few frames long to edit out the use of props. volcanochaser > In one of the most ridiculous moments of this episode, Bear removes his socks to use them to protect his hands while crossing a rough a'a flow. Protecting the legs and feet is of paramount importance while navigating through rough a'a surfaces, since it is almost impossible to crawl out of them should one suffer an injury. Even the tiniest piece of sharp lava rock can do serious damage if it gets lodged inside the shoe and there is no sock to protect the skin. Good thing that Bear was just by the shoulder of the road.
volcanochaser > The area where Bear was supposed to have hiked on the Big Island of Hawaii is only about 19 degrees north of the equator. Yet, after two days of hiking in sunny weather without a hat or even suntan lotion, Bear emerges without even a decent tan. Had he actually been exposed to the sun for two days, he would have been suffering from a severe sunburn. Sunburn is one of the most common "injuries" after being out in the open for a few hours without sun protection in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
volcanochaser > Same side of Mauna Ulu as seen from the viewpoint on Chain of Craters Road...Mauna Ulu cannot be seen from Pu'u O'o or any place between Pu'u O'o and the ocean.
volcanochaser > Jaggar Museum (not seen in episode, but used as a reference point) at the summit of Kilauea....4000 foot elevation. The museum is visible from the fissure area where Bear has trouble crossing the fissures, but is edited from view by using closeup shots or views in other directions.
