volcanochaser  > Nature > Man vs Wild
These are scenes which were supposedly along a route from Pu'u O'o to the Pacific Ocean in the Kilauea episode of Man vs Wild. Except for the landing site, they were, in fact, a few feet from various roads and highways used by thousands of tourists daily. Update: The original concept was that Bear Grylls would be dropped into remote areas and make his way to civilization with no help. The Discovery Channel removed this episode and several others from circulation after they were shown to be fake. Other early episodes were heavily edited to remove fake scenes, and new voice-overs were used to disclose that he received help from the crew including the building of shelters and the supplying of animals. Disclaimers on recent episodes disclose that scenes are staged.

volcanochaser > Tourist looks at lava flowing in a lava tube. Notice the bluish tinge in the escaping fumes above the tube area. Except for the main vents, such as Pu'u O'o and some areas around the caldera, fuming areas in Kilauea which contain irritants from volcanic gases are highly localized and small in area. They are also present in small areas over active lava tubes, which further reduces the area of their presence to an insignificant size. They can easily be gone around or passed through by holding one's breath for a few seconds. All fuming areas away from the active tubes are composed of water vapor caused by rain water coming into contact with hot spots from previous flows.
volcanochaser > The area where Bear was supposed to have hiked on the Big Island of Hawaii is only about 19 degrees north of the equator. Yet, after two days of hiking in sunny weather without a hat or even suntan lotion, Bear emerges without even a decent tan. Had he actually been exposed to the sun for two days, he would have been suffering from a severe sunburn. Sunburn is one of the most common "injuries" after being out in the open for a few hours without sun protection in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
volcanochaser > In one of the most ridiculous moments of this episode, Bear removes his socks to use them to protect his hands while crossing a rough a'a flow. Protecting the legs and feet is of paramount importance while navigating through rough a'a surfaces, since it is almost impossible to crawl out of them should one suffer an injury. Even the tiniest piece of sharp lava rock can do serious damage if it gets lodged inside the shoe and there is no sock to protect the skin. Good thing that Bear was just by the shoulder of the road.
volcanochaser > This photo shows the Pacific Ocean from about the 2000 foot level, indicating that that there was no mystery as to where the ocean was. Bear was not able to see it until he was at sea level a few feet from the coast.
volcanochaser > This is the east side of Pu'u O'o vent near which Bear was supposedly lowered by chopper into a small crater. No such crater exists near Pu'u O'o and the landing site is actually located five miles downslope and only three easy miles from his final destination at the end of Highway 130. Pu'u O'o is visible for many miles, but it is never shown from the ground, indicating that Bear was never near this vent.
volcanochaser > West side of Pu'u O'o. Pu'u O'o is visible for many miles, but it is never shown from the ground, indicating that Bear was never near this vent.
