volcanochaser  > Nature > Man vs Wild
These are scenes which were supposedly along a route from Pu'u O'o to the Pacific Ocean in the Kilauea episode of Man vs Wild. Except for the landing site, they were, in fact, a few feet from various roads and highways used by thousands of tourists daily. Update: The original concept was that Bear Grylls would be dropped into remote areas and make his way to civilization with no help. The Discovery Channel removed this episode and several others from circulation after they were shown to be fake. Other early episodes were heavily edited to remove fake scenes, and new voice-overs were used to disclose that he received help from the crew including the building of shelters and the supplying of animals. Disclaimers on recent episodes disclose that scenes are staged.

volcanochaser > Same side of Mauna Ulu as seen from the viewpoint on Chain of Craters Road...Mauna Ulu cannot be seen from Pu'u O'o or any place between Pu'u O'o and the ocean.
volcanochaser > Aerial photo of the gravel end of Highway 130 taken by the US Geological Survey on March 6, 2008 as a new flow of lava reaches the ocean. (http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/) Very early in the MvW episode, Bear Grylls is looking for the ocean and civilization. He stands next to the road and points to the forest kipukas on the right and declares that that is the area that he must enter to find food, shelter and water. At the end of the episode, at a different camera angle, he points to the house on the right and declares that he has found civilization.

The shatter ring where Bear landed is about three miles uphill and near the horizon in the center of the photo (not visible). It would have been an easy one hour hike to the road, but there is no footage he actually hiked to the road. Instead, most of the episode was taped near other roads and highways.
volcanochaser > View of small forest kipuka as seen on M v W Kilauea episode as Bear prepares to enter the forest in search of water near the beginning of the episode. (His previous scene shows him near the Mauna Ulu vent, about 60 miles away and 3000 feet higher in elevation.) Bear is actually standing next to the gravel end of Highway 130 next to the ocean and is in the same spot where he makes his final exit at the end of the episode.
volcanochaser > The forest kipuka mentioned by bear about 14 minutes into the episode before he enters the forest looking for water. The forest shown here, by the way, is completely different in vegetation than the one he actually entered in another part of the island. This area at sea level has palm trees and other plants introduced by human inhabitants, whereas Bear enters an area of tree ferns and other native vegetation more typical of undeveloped areas such as the wetter side of the higher elevations of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
volcanochaser > The local residence that bear points to on his way out. It's the same residence that is next to the kipuka that he is planning to enter early in the episode when he goes looking for water, but which is edited out of view. The area is at the end of the gravel part of Highway 130.
volcanochaser > Bear's boot catches on fire spontaneously while supposedly walking on hot lava. Shoe soles will start to melt and feel slippery after several minutes when walking on recently crusted lava, but not burst into flames instantly. Not even wood will burst into flames when in contact with crusted lava. Probably faked with the use of lighter fluid and a match. This sequence is only a few frames long to edit out the use of props.

It has been disclosed that the lava scenes were simulated with charcoal. (http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/tv_and_radio/article2241720.ece)
volcanochaser > Tourist walks on freshly crusted lava on an active flow. The crust is still close to the melting point of lava and there is liquid lava underfoot, but her sneakers are not bursting into flames like Bear's did on the Kilauea episode, indicating that the flames were faked with the aid of lighter fluid. Also lava does not produce smoke unless it is burning something, also indicating that the lava in the episode was faked by burning charcoal in the lava cracks. Note that recently crusted lava has a silvery appearance, unlike the darker and much older looking lava that Bear is walking on.
volcanochaser > This photograph shows two county helicopters responding to a tourist with a broken ankle near the coast. (August 24, 2001) Such helicopters are used extensively to search for hikers when they are reported missing or their car is left unattended for more than one day. Bear did not have a plan to get the attention of the numerous tour choppers and instead chose to hide himself from view by going into the tropical forest (which does not even exist near this area) and even going down a steep lava tube opening. Also shown is the 2000 foot cliff that is never shown when Bear is supposedly making his way down from the top.
volcanochaser > Bear ties a T shirt around his head to protect himself from volcanic gases. The Hawaii Department of Health states that such methods are not effective in removing gases such as sulfur dioxide. (http://hawaii.gov/health/about/reports/vog_qa.pdf) If it were able to filter a gas like sulfur dioxide, it would also filter a gas like oxygen.

It has been disclosed that the fumes shown in the episode were generated by fog machines. (http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/tv_and_radio/article2241720.ece)

Volcanic fumes which have irritants like sulfur dioxide or hydrogen sulfide have a bluish tinge. Except for the main vents like Puu Oo and Halemaumau, gases which contain irritants are limited to extremely small areas over lava tubes and can be easily gone around or walked through in seconds.
