volcanochaser  > Nature > Man vs Wild
These are scenes which were supposedly along a route from Pu'u O'o to the Pacific Ocean in the Kilauea episode of Man vs Wild. Except for the landing site, they were, in fact, a few feet from various roads and highways used by thousands of tourists daily. Update: The original concept was that Bear Grylls would be dropped into remote areas and make his way to civilization with no help. The Discovery Channel removed this episode and several others from circulation after they were shown to be fake. Other early episodes were heavily edited to remove fake scenes, and new voice-overs were used to disclose that he received help from the crew including the building of shelters and the supplying of animals. Disclaimers on recent episodes disclose that scenes are staged.

volcanochaser > Same lava draperies on the side of fissure...just a five minute walk to Crater Rim Drive on the SW Rift Zone of Kilauea...base of Mauna Loa in the background....Highway 11, not visible, is less than two miles away at the base of Mauna Loa. The yellowish meadow is a pasture on the other side of Highway 11 where cows can normally be seen grazing by the side of the road.

The base of Mauna Loa is also seen when Bear emerges from the shatter ring where he landed. Mauana Loa is not visible from that location.
volcanochaser > Jaggar Museum (not seen in episode, but used as a reference point) at the summit of Kilauea....4000 foot elevation. The museum is visible from the fissure area where Bear has trouble crossing the fissures, but is edited from view by using closeup shots or views in other directions.
volcanochaser > SW Rift Zone and parking area on the Crater Rim Drive as seen from Jaggar Museum. The first "Bear" bridge is about 200 feet to the right of the red car.
volcanochaser > SW Rift Zone parking area on the Crater Rim Drive....this is the same location seen on the short video as the camera pans out to the road from the "Bear" bridge....a very popular area seen by thousands of tourists daily...most likely place for film crew to park and walk a few hundred feet to shoot a large part of the tv episode. Scenes from this area were included near the beginning, near the end, and other places in between.
volcanochaser > The fissures in the Southwest Rift Zone on the summit of Kilauea is a favorite spot to explore in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Bear Grylls as well as millions of tourists have been here over the years.
volcanochaser > Fissure which Bear explores and as seen on M v W Kilauea episode. Supposedly at sea level next to the ocean, but actually at the 4000 foot elevation on the summit of Kilauea and a five minute walk from Crater Rim Drive.
volcanochaser > Same fissure which Bear explores on the SW Rift Zone at the summit of Kilauea...fissures are only a few hundred feet long and can be gone around easily....I am standing on one end and the other end is clearly visible, which is typical of these fissures. Located near the Crater Rim Drive. These fissures were not created by earthquakes as Bear claims, but by collapsing like sink holes after the underlying lava drained away. Many tourists venture into these fissures and survive just like Bear did, but without the theatrics.
volcanochaser > This is a part of a satellite photo from NASA showing the SW Rift Zone on the summit of Kilauea. The full photo can be found here: http://veimages.gsfc.nasa.gov//17391/kilauea_iko_2003014_lrg.jpg.

This shows the location of the fissures next to Crater Rim Drive on the summit of Kilauea, which is 4000 feet higher in elevation and nowhere near the active lava zone near the ocean. This also shows how easy it is to go around the fissures instead of trying to cross them or trying to climb down into them for no apparent reason since they are all oriented in the same direction and it is much easier to walk on the surface. Also, most of them are vertical drops and don't have a convenient sloping surface that can be climbed. In fact, Bear goes down into the "Explored fissure" near the rock memorial and is forced to come back out the same end.

The bluish areas are lava flows whereas the brownish areas are ash deposits. The volcanic fissures were not formed by the ground spreading apart, but more like sink holes where underground lava drained away and the overlying layers collapsed into the voids. Many other ground features look like fissures, but they are gullies created by flash floods eroding away the deep layers of ash.
volcanochaser > View of Mauna Ulu volcanic vent as seen on the M v W Kilauea episode as Bear crosses hot lava. This area was last active in 1974, so there is no lava in this area. Also this vent is not visible from Pu'u O'o or any place between Pu'u O'o and the ocean. This view is from Chain of Craters Road. From this location at the 3000 foot level, Bear suddenly appears next to a forest kipuka at the end of Highway 130 at sea level and almost 60 miles away.
