These are scenes which were supposedly along a route from Pu'u O'o to the Pacific Ocean in the Kilauea episode of Man vs Wild. Except for the landing site, they were, in fact, a few feet from various roads and highways used by thousands of tourists daily. Update: The original concept was that Bear Grylls would be dropped into remote areas and make his way to civilization with no help. The Discovery Channel removed this episode and several others from circulation after they were shown to be fake. Other early episodes were heavily edited to remove fake scenes, and new voice-overs were used to disclose that he received help from the crew including the building of shelters and the supplying of animals. Disclaimers on recent episodes disclose that scenes are staged.
Same lava draperies on the side of fissure...just a five minute walk to Crater Rim Drive on the SW Rift Zone of Kilauea...base of Mauna Loa in the background....Highway 11, not visible, is less than two miles away at the base of Mauna Loa. The yellowish meadow is a pasture on the other side of Highway 11 where cows can normally be seen grazing by the side of the road.
The base of Mauna Loa is also seen when Bear emerges from the shatter ring where he landed. Mauana Loa is not visible from that location.
