volcanochaser  > Nature > Man vs Wild
These are scenes which were supposedly along a route from Pu'u O'o to the Pacific Ocean in the Kilauea episode of Man vs Wild. Except for the landing site, they were, in fact, a few feet from various roads and highways used by thousands of tourists daily. Update: The original concept was that Bear Grylls would be dropped into remote areas and make his way to civilization with no help. The Discovery Channel removed this episode and several others from circulation after they were shown to be fake. Other early episodes were heavily edited to remove fake scenes, and new voice-overs were used to disclose that he received help from the crew including the building of shelters and the supplying of animals. Disclaimers on recent episodes disclose that scenes are staged.

volcanochaser > Bear crosses the first bridge over the fissures that were blocking his way next to the ocean. This bridge is actually a few hundred feet from Crater Rim Drive on the summit of Kilauea. No such fissures exist near the ocean. This is a very popular viewing area and the early morning shadows show that it was probably taped before most of the tourists arrived.
volcanochaser > The first bridge crossed by Bear in the Kilauea episode...a two minute walk from Crater Rim Drive on the SW Rift Zone at the 4000 foot elevation on the summit of Kilauea. The thick layers of reddish ash in between thin layers of lava are only common near the main caldera of Kilauea and are not present near the ocean, where Bear stated that these fissures were located. It is a 50 mile drive from here to the ocean at the end of Highway 130, which was his final destination.
volcanochaser > The first bridge shown from the other side. Tour bus and cars shown are parked along the Crater Rim Drive on the summit of Kilauea. Most likely place for Bear and film crew to park and walk a few hundred feet to shoot a large part of the tv episode. The main caldera is on the other side of the road. This area is visible from Jaggar Museum, which is one mile away on the top of the ridge. Volcano Village is about five miles away and downtown Hilo is about 35 miles away. Hilo is a shorter drive than Bear's final destination at the end of Highway 130.
volcanochaser > The first bridge showing the solid base and the end of the fissure a few feet away. The longest fissures are only a few hundred feet long and can be easily gone around. Fissures like this one with a handy bridge don't exist anywhere else on Kilauea. It is simply a section between two adjoining fissures. Bear's analogy with a snow bridge over a crevasse is ridiculous. There are lots of narrow cracks that can be just stepped over, so the argument that he was just showing people how to cross fissures someplace else is also ridiculous. Common sense will dictate whether to go around or climb down and then up the other side.
volcanochaser > Bear crosses the second bridge, also a few hundred feet from Crater Rim Drive. Camera is kept low to partially hide the rock memorial shown just above his right shoulder.
volcanochaser > Second bridge crossed by Bear in the Kilauea episode of Man vs Wild. Camera shot was very narrow and low to keep from showing the nearby ends of the fissure and that it was only a few feet deep. Rock memorial shown at center near top...this rock memorial stands out like a sore thumb in the background as Bear moves around back and forth in a random manner in this area and can be seen at various times during the episode....located near Crater Rim Drive on the SW Rift Zone at the summit of Kilauea.
volcanochaser > Another view of second bridge crossed by Bear. A very popular area for tourists also, since it is only a few minutes from Crater Rim Drive.
volcanochaser > View of Crater Rim Drive from rock memorial. Dried leis are from a previous ceremony. Jaggar Museum is on the upper left. The main caldera is on the other side of the road.
