volcanochaser  > Nature > Man vs Wild
These are scenes which were supposedly along a route from Pu'u O'o to the Pacific Ocean in the Kilauea episode of Man vs Wild. Except for the landing site, they were, in fact, a few feet from various roads and highways used by thousands of tourists daily. Update: The original concept was that Bear Grylls would be dropped into remote areas and make his way to civilization with no help. The Discovery Channel removed this episode and several others from circulation after they were shown to be fake. Other early episodes were heavily edited to remove fake scenes, and new voice-overs were used to disclose that he received help from the crew including the building of shelters and the supplying of animals. Disclaimers on recent episodes disclose that scenes are staged.

volcanochaser > This is a copy of the lava flow map found in the USGS website http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/ which I have marked to show the location of the shatter ring where Bear Grylls landed in relation to Pu'u O'o and his final destination at the end of Highway 130. Bear Grylls stated that he was going to land in the upper slopes of the volcano but instead landed five miles downslope from Pu'u O'o in an inactive area and only about 3 miles from his final destination. There is no footage in the episode showing that he actually hiked from the landing site to the final destination. Instead, most of the footage is in other parts of the island next to highways and tourist areas.
volcanochaser > Bear Grylls stated that he had landed in a dormant crater with a lava lake just a few feet under his feet and noxious fumes seeping out of the ground. The crater-like structure he landed in is, in fact, a shatter ring formed when an obstructed lava tube forms a bulge and shatters the surface crust into a circular pattern. Eruptive vents can only form at the rift zone, which is about five miles uphill from this location. There has been no lava under this ring since 1992. There are not even traces of steam, which is present over cooling tubes for many years after they stop flowing. In fact, there is an island of forest nearby which was edited from view. This shatter ring is located in the Kahaulea Natural Area Reserve at the 1500 foot elevation, but his next scene out of the shatter ring is miraculously many miles away at the summit of Kilauea at the 4000 foot elevation in the opposite direction of the ocean, which was his stated goal.
volcanochaser > Closeup photo of the shatter ring shows the shattered sections of surface crust which were forced up by the clogged tube before 1992. There is no spatter or cinders as is common in eruptive vents, but only dense pahoehoe lava as is common in surface flows. Ferns and other vegetation indicate that there is no lava a few feet below and certainly no noxious fumes. A well made platform of rocks about four feet square by three feet high is shown on the far end. This is also clearly visible on the left side of the aerial photo of Bear Grylls as he lands inside the shatter ring.
volcanochaser > Closeup view of the rock platform. Probably constructed by the residents of nearby Royal Gardens subdivision before their access road was destroyed in the year 2000. Although it was only a few feet from Bear when he was inside the shatter ring, it was edited from view. Also edited from view from the aerial shots was the subdivision itself with its many paved streets and a few houses with residents still living there.
volcanochaser > View of inside the shatter ring from the M v W episode. All the footage is kept low to keep the adjoining forest from view. Views of the ocean and houses only three miles away are also edited out.
volcanochaser > Same view of shatter ring from inside showing a more detailed view of the shattered crust. Notice how the different layers of lava on the upper left, especially on the large image size, show a definite circular deformation as it was being pushed upward from below. Also notice that there is no spatter or cinders as is common in eruptive vents.
volcanochaser > View of an island of forest to the west of the shatter ring, which was edged out from view in the M v W aerial photo. The next scene in the M v W episode, in fact, shows old lava flows from the summit of Kilauea about 50 highway miles away and 2500 feet higher in elevation, and opposite in direction to his supposed journey to the ocean. The bogus editing of footage showing tens of miles of distance from one frame to the next is very common in the episode.
volcanochaser > View of ocean and houses in the Kalapana area along Highway 130 about three miles away from the shatter ring. Nearsighted Bear was not able to see the ocean until he was a few feet from it. Kalapana was destroyed by the lava flows of the early 1990's, but residents have been coming back and building on the bare lava flows. The end of Highway 130, his final destination, is about one mile to the right and obstructed by the edge of the nearby ridge..
volcanochaser > View of the end of Highway 130 from the ridge next to the shatter ring. The white structure in the center of the photo is a mobile home (see larger image) at the end of the gravel end of Highway 130, which was the final destination of Bear Grylls as he ended his strange odyssey of pretending to be stranded in the wilderness of Kilauea. Bear Grylls and his crew probably got back in their choppers and headed back to the airport, since there is no footage of the area between the shatter ring and Highway 130, or any area within miles of the shatter ring. There are no active flows, avocado trees, lava tubes with water flowing from tree roots, tropical forest, fissures with special bridges, and delicious honeycombs in this area. It is just an easy downhill hike of about one hour for a young man carrying only a flint, a knife and a water bottle (and maybe a life jacket hidden under his shirt).
