A tour boat waits in vain for the lava to return to the ocean entry. A wisp of steam from cooling lava rock is all that remains of the huge steam plume which usually dominates the landscape. Jan 5, 2010
The established lava tube coming down Pulama Pali through the Royal Gardens subdivision still emits steam from the ground water which makes its way into the tube. The short stubs of eight concrete columns seen left of center is all that remains of a pavilion which was under construction in the area. Jan 5, 2010
Closer view of the concrete columns now embedded deep in recent lava. These columns were once ten feet tall. Some of the columns have been buried to the top and others have been lifted higher by the lava. Jan 5, 2010
Some of the steel brackets, 1/2 inch in thickness have broken away from the top of the columns. The columns were heavily reinforced with thick reinforcing rods, but steel has virtually no strength when heated to the 2000 degrees of the liquid lava. Jan 5, 2010
This column only sticks out about two feet, but it has been floated up by the lava from its original height. Jan 5, 2010
The columns were originally at the same height of ten feet, but now vary many feet in height as some of the columns were uprooted and moved about by the invading lava. Jan 5, 2010
This aerial photo was taken by the USGS on January 19, 2010. The flow from Jan 19 had stalled by Jan 26 and the area was similar during my visit on that day. This view towards the west is looking almost directly towards Tuberose Street on the upper northwest section of Royal Gardens. Just about 100 feet into the forest is the intersection with Alii Street. The back of a stop sign and the green street sign can be seen just right of the glowing lava in the center. Some black smoke can be seen on the right side as lava flows down Alii towards the intersection with Tuberose. A parallel flow of shiny lava on this side is shown in the center flowing from right to left. January 26, 2010
