Small skylight over the eastern tube at about the 600 foot elevation of the Royal Gardens flow field. This tube feeds the ocean entry. Forested area is on the western side of Royal Gardens. The fuming areas near the forest are from the western tube feeding the surface flows on the lava flats. January 4, 2009
Slightly different view of the same skylight showing the glowing clinkers from a previous a'a flow. The tube opening also shows that recent surface flows from upstream were draining into the opening. Jan 4, 2009
Closer view of the skylight over the active tube. The very light orange/yellow on the lower right is the flowing lava. The flow is from bottom to top. Darker shades of orange are the glowing walls of the tube. The opening from the side near the top is from a smaller tube which has lost its flow to the larger tube upstream from this location. Surface flows start out as many fingered streams and gradually consolidate into the tube which has the most efficient flow characteristics. Jan 4, 2009
Another skylight a few hundred feet upstream is located in the low spot shown here. This skylight formed when a surge in flow uplifted the upper layers of rock and deposited them downstream from here. Jan 4, 2009
View of the skylight from above showing the flowing lava about 20 feet from the surface. Jan 4, 2009
Closer view of the flowing lava in light orange and the darker orange glowing walls. Jan 4, 2009
View of Paradise Street on the western side of Royal Gardens with lava from about late October. Paradise continues, but has a slight jog to the left and cannot be seen from here. Jan 4, 2009
The white house, a longtime landmark on Prince Street, burned down on the night of October 23, 2008 and only metal roofing and other objects remain. Jan 4, 2009
Closer view of the roof from the white house. The object on the right is the stove. The house was built on posts with the floor about five feet off the ground in the back and eight feet off the ground in the front. The house was set on fire by a brush fire from a nearby lava flow. Jan 4, 2009
