volcanochaser > View of ocean and houses in the Kalapana area along Highway 130 about four miles away from the 1500 foot elevation of Pulama Pali. Kalapana was destroyed by the lava flows of the early 1990's, but residents have been coming back and building on the bare lava flows. The end of Highway 130 is about one mile to the right and obstructed by the edge of the nearby ridge. Jan 6, 2008
volcanochaser > Tree mold and the tree trunk that used to grow there. About 30 inches in diameter. Tree molds are created when a lava flow overruns a forest and the lava cools around the trees. Typically the base in contact with the lava will burn faster and cause the tree to topple. If the adjoining lava has crusted over, the tree may just lay on top and not burn. The section of the trunk inside the lava will continue to burn and leave an empty mold of the tree, including the root system. Location is just east of Royal Gardens on the 1986-1992 lava flows. volcanochaser > Aerial photo looking northwest taken January 11, 2008 by the US Geological Survey. Photo is from the USGS Kilauea website,http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/ and shows the southern front of the flow about one half mile from the upper section of the Royal Gardens Subdivision . The active flow is the brownish a'a flow meandering down the middle of the photo. The lighter flows on the right are from the 1980's. The dark pahoehoe flows on the left are from 2002. The following photos from Jan 11, 2008 were taken at the front of the flow shown in this photo and at the Royal Gardens Subdivision.
volcanochaser > This a'a flow, about 15 feet high, moved rapidly about two miles from the active shields at the source but is now beginning to stall at this small island of trees spared from previous flows. Jan 11, 2008
